Summer celebrations are gearing up, and the commemorative fun often includes the bright, colorful addition of fireworks! Safety and consideration for others should always be a priority, and are especially important when handling or viewing fireworks within and HOA.

As firework season approaches, it’s worth reminding association members of the following tips to ensure a safe, enjoyable celebration.

  • Keep it Legal. Nothing ruins a party like getting into trouble with the law. Avoid any unpleasant interruptions and/or consequences by only purchasing and setting off fireworks that are allowed under the state or city laws, be mindful of any restrictions due to weather conditions, and use your fireworks only as directed.
  • Follow the Rules. Before planning to set off fireworks at your residence, check the HOA documents or CC&Rs to make sure you aren’t violating any rules or regulations and to avoid last minute changes or cancellations to your festivities.
  • Inform your Guests. An influx of visitors around the summer holidays means increased traffic and decreased parking and driving space. Be sure to let your guests know ahead of time when and where they can park, as well as any other HOA rules they should be aware of. Remember, guests may be the ones to break the rules, but you’ll be held responsible by your HOA!
  • Be Fire Safe. Use fireworks in areas designated safe by your HOA to prevent potential injury and costly damage. It’s recommended to soak used fireworks in a bucket of water to prevent spreading sparks, and keep a fire extinguisher or hose nearby in case of an emergency.
  • Protect your Pets. Fireworks aren’t as fun for many of our furry friends. It’s a good idea to keep pets locked up safely inside your home to prevent them from running away or getting lost or injured.
  • Clean Up! Fireworks can leave quite the mess. Enjoy your celebration, and then avoid incurring fines or aggravating neighbors by cleaning up food, litter, and firework debris promptly and completely.
  • Supervise Children. Keep a close eye on your children while using fireworks to prevent burns or other injuries. If your association or home has a pool, remind small children of water safety and know where they are at all times.
  • Be Courteous. Celebrate with your neighbors in mind. Treat them with respect, be mindful of your noise level, and end your festivities at a reasonable hour.
