Homeowners Associations (HOAs) may choose to do Trunk or Treat events over traditional trick-or-treating due to safety reasons and accommodations. When creating a Trunk or Treat event, it is recommended to plan to hold the event on a weekend shortly before Halloween for the anticipation of the holiday and to avoid school nights. Giving notice of the event several weeks before allows plenty of time for volunteers to sign up, which in turn creates a smooth-running event with enough candy and decorative trunks.

Trunk or Treat vs. Trick or Treat

In recent years, you may have noticed the term “Trunk or Treat” being brought up by other families or neighbors. Trunk or Treat refers to an event where parents or volunteers decorate their car trunk and pass out candy to children in their Halloween costumes in a controlled space, like a neighborhood parking lot. These events have gained popularity for several reasons, including safety, accommodation, and scheduling.

  • Safety: The #1 reason Trunk or Treat began was for safety reasons. While traditional trick or treating is door-to-door, Trunk or Treat is in a controlled space. Parents can keep an eye on their child while still participating in the holiday.
  • Accommodation: With Trunk or Treat being on a smaller scale, rules can be set up to make it a safer space for everyone. Areas able to accommodate those with mobility issues should be the first choice of locale for these events. Also, think about offering allergen-free candy for the event.
  • Scheduling: Halloween typically falls on a weekday, which can be tough on school nights. With Trunk or Treat, organizers can plan to hold the event on a weekend so that the event can run longer.

Organizing the Event

Whether it is your first time planning Trunk or Treat or your 20th, it may be overwhelming as it is a highly anticipated event. Here are some tips to help ease the process.

Pick a Date/Time: It is time to pick a date and time! Trunk or Treat events are typically held the weekend before Halloween, but they can be done anytime in October. Pick a Friday or Saturday night if you want it to run late, and a Sunday if you want more daytime during the experience.

Location: Trunk or Treats should be in a communal spot in or near your neighborhood. Think of a community center, park, or pool parking lot. The location should be easily rememberable and accessible to neighbors.

Volunteers: Trunk or Treat events depend on volunteers to pass out candy and decorate their car trunks. Volunteers can be parents, retirees, or those just looking to help. If you are having trouble finding volunteers, incentivize with a Trunk Decorating Contest with prizes!

When creating a Trunk or Treat event, it is important to give proper notice of the event. With several weeks to prepare, kids are more likely to dress up, and more trunks will be decorated. The most important rule is to have fun! Trunk or Treat is a safer alternative to trick or treating that involves the whole neighborhood. Using these tips can help you plan a successful event for everyone to enjoy.
