For individuals who live in a warmer climate, they may feel that there’s no need to prepare for winter. But, if they ever plan on traveling to a colder climate during the winter months, it’s best that they also prepare for the challenges that winter can bring.

Pack Smart

When traveling, be sure to pack for the climate you’re traveling to, not the climate you’re currently in. Bring enough light clothing for adding layers for warmth, sensible shoes that will be easy to walk in if you come across a patch of ice or snow, and all of the usual winter accessories that will keep you warm.

Prepare for the Worst

When planning travel, oftentimes you’re planning too far ahead to be able to anticipate what the weather will be around the time of your travels. Take extra precautions to save yourself time and money, should weather derail your plans.

  • Know cancellation policies prior to booking. When making travel plans for the winter months, keep in mind that the flights and rental cars you’re booking may very well have to be cancelled due to weather. Be sure to check the cancellation policy or bad weather policy for the airlines and rental agencies as you’re making arrangements.
  • Keep an eye on the weather. As your travel date approaches, be sure to keep an eye on weather in your destination as well as any planned stops along your route. If you have a connecting flight in Chicago and they are expecting a significant snowstorm, then you may find yourself scrambling to make last minute changes to your route.
  • Arrive early. On the day of your travels, arrive as early as possible to the airport to give yourself plenty of time to address any potential delays. Also, pack some carry-on clothing, food and water, toiletries, and books or magazines. If you experience any significant delays along your journey, you’ll be happy to have those necessities on hand.

Drive Safe

The best option for driving in icy, snowy conditions, especially if you’re not used to them, is to not drive at all. However, if you find yourself needing to drive in hazardous conditions, be sure to know how to do it right. See here for a guide that provides tips on safe winter driving.

Keep Safety a Priority…and Have Fun!

The most important thing to remember throughout winter, whether you live in a cold climate or are traveling to one, is to stay safe. By following the steps we provided above, you will not only be preparing you and your loved ones for a safe holiday season, but you’ll also be avoiding any injury or unnecessary delays that could get in the way of your holiday plans.
