School’s out, the sun’s shining, and families are spending more time outdoors! It’s prime season for barbecues, pool parties, and soaking in the sun. Keeping your community safe during these high-traffic outdoor months is always a top priority.

Here are some quick safety reminders:

Stay Sun Smart

  • Whether it is a walk, pool day, or yard work, make sure you have water in hand. Drinking at least 8 oz. of water before heading out can help prevent dehydration from sneaking up on you.
  • With skin cancer being the most common cancer in the U.S., daily SPF is non-negotiable—especially if you will be outdoors for more than 15 minutes.
  • The sun is at its strongest Between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you can, schedule outdoor time for earlier or later in the day.

Poolside Precautions

  • If you are hosting an event at the community’s pool, keep an eye on who’s swimming and who is not. Acting as an unofficial lifeguard might be the best role you take on all summer.
  • Encourage swimming lessons. For families with little ones, point them toward swim lesson resources or ensure they always have the proper swim equipment with them.

Grilling with Caution

  • Keep grills at least 6 feet away from homes, fences, and overhanging branches.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or large water bottle nearby just in case.

Following these tips will help prevent flare-ups and keeps flames under control.

Southern Heat

If you are in Texas or Arizona, remind neighbors of the extra outdoor risks that come with the climate:

  • Hiking? Go for boots and long pants.
  • Watch for fire ant mounds, brush piles (snake hideouts), and standing water (bug magnets).
  • Keep your lawn trimmed at a shorty length and free of debris. Fewer hiding spots means fewer unwanted guests making a home in the shade of your yard. Regular pest control can go a long way, too.

While we cannot guarantee a sunburn-free, wildlife-free, perfect summer, a little prevention goes a long way. Share these tips with your community to help everyone enjoy the season safely!
