Community gardens are all the rage right now, and for good reason. Gardening offers people the chance to grow their own food and reap the rewards of hard work and diligence. But beyond that, a community garden offers a group of people the chance to come together and bond over a common interest.

If your community is considering a garden, here are three tips that make it a success!

Fund raise!

Once your garden is approved and everyone is on board, you’re going to need to find a way to fund it. Work with your community to raise funds if your HOA doesn’t already have the funds to support it.

Talent search!

Gardening isn’t rocket science, but it does take diligence, knowledge, and patience. For your garden to be successful you’ll need to find residents who are passionate about it and are willing to come out every day to tend it. One of the best ways to do this is to engage kids under the attentive supervision of adults. Grow some fun things like sunflowers and berries and you’ll have the attention of all the kids!

Build the garden and outline rules!

Find a good sunny location that has access to irrigation, and start building! Get residents to volunteer time and tools and your community will bond over the construction of the garden. Take this time to establish rules for who will tend the garden and when. When people make a commitment on paper and rules are posted, gardens are more successful.

Remember, community gardens grow more than food; they grow comradery and neighborhood unity. They create a better sense of community, families can come together to enjoy their common areas, and the supplementary fruit/veggies or beautiful flowers make it a total win.
