When most of us think of summer, we think of hot sunny days by the water, but the summer months in Texas are also known for their wild storms. It can be hot one minute, and the next second the black storm clouds start rolling in. When planning outdoor activities, consider any looming storms on the horizon and go through this checklist before any events!

  1. Check local weather forecasts. The weatherman may not always be right, but it’s the best first step!
  2. Avoid bad weather months. In Texas, some months are known for their notoriously bad weather. Plan your HOA events then.
  3. Pull together a back up plan. If you’re planning an outdoor event, have an indoor location in mind as a backup. That means the party can go on, rain or shine!
  4. If severe weather is forecasted, consider rescheduling the event. While it may be disappointing, severe thunderstorms or even tornados are nothing to mess around with in Texas.
  5. Draft an emergency plan. If the weather takes a turn for the worst in the middle of an event, having an emergency plan will come in handy. Your plan should include finding a safe, enclosed shelter, staying low to the ground and away from tall trees/water, staying away from windows that could shatter, and turning off as many electronics as possible.
  6. Check HOA insurance coverage. Talk with your HOA’s insurance agent to make sure the coverage your community carries is adequate for property and liability.

At the end of the day, no one can completely plan for the weather, but by taking basic steps and precautions your HOA can hopefully avoid any major weather interference during planned events.
