As an HOA there are a few things your board can do to help protect the community, and to also prepare for a worst case scenario. Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Let’s look at the things your board can do to plan for emergencies. It is helpful to first identify a point person on the board to keep track of these items so everything is kept together in one safe place.

  • Put together a community-wide contact list that can also be shared with the community.
  • Connect with neighboring HOAs and exchange emergency contact information.
  • Keep emergency reference material (i.e. a first aid book) handy.
  • Keep maps of your city/surrounding area.
  • Buy a large first aid kit.
  • Keep a battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert handy.
  • Keep extra batteries on hand.

The list could go on and on, but if every home puts together an emergency preparedness kit similar to this, or anything else they feel is necessary for their household, your community will handle any emergency better! Take the time to work with your property management company to make sure your board has a plan and that your community is thinking about creating one for their individual family, too!
